I have a slightly contrarian view on this — whilst I cherish and stand up for regional identities and a cooperative, competitive federal unit; I think a strong centre is at the very heart of the idea of India. Periods of Indian strength, through history, have always been derived from periods of centralisation and unity in command and control.

A successful space program, a strong and modern military and global diplomatic clout can only be built by a strong united centre. For the first time in a while, there is a certain pride in India’s actions, even if some of it is misplaced.

As a corollary, there is bound to be overreach and misuse of power — and I agree with you, recent trends aren’t encouraging and need some correction. I fully believe as citizens one can fight back against overreach.
